A Home of Hope in India: Rehabilitation, Physiotherapy, and Recreational Area

In West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas, one of India’s poorest regions, poverty, hunger, and lack of access to healthcare leave many struggling to survive. Amid this hardship, the Calcutta Home of Hope-Ashabari, founded over 25 years ago by Mr. Joseph Das and Mrs. Lily Das, stands as a sanctuary for the abandoned and destitute.
Home of Hope offers more than shelter. It provides compassion, healing, and dignity to the homeless, mentally challenged, and critically ill. Many residents regain health, memories, and hope; some even reunite with their families, while others find in Ashabari a lifelong home filled with care and peace.
Ashabari faces significant challenges in caring for residents with severe physical disabilities and emotional trauma, as it currently lacks a dedicated space for proper rehabilitation and therapeutic activities. Without appropriate physiotherapy equipment and a safe recreational area, many residents cannot regain mobility, reduce pain, or experience meaningful social interaction. Creating this new facility is essential to improving their quality of life, independence, and overall well-being.

To continue this mission of healing, Defi For Good is supporting the creation of a dedicated physiotherapy and rehabilitation area at Ashabari.
This new facility will provide essential physical rehabilitation for residents who suffer from chronic conditions, limited mobility, and severe physical disabilities.
With professional physiotherapy equipment and tailored exercises, residents will experience improved mobility, reduced pain, and a better quality of life. Equally important, the recreational area will offer a safe and uplifting environment for social interaction, play, and emotional renewal, fostering community, joy, and mental well-being among the residents.
This project represents a vital step in transforming Ashabari from a place of refuge into a true center of recovery and hope.

Direct Beneficiaries: 130 residents, homeless and mentally challenged individuals, many with severe physical impairments.
Indirect Beneficiaries: Ashabari’s caregivers and volunteers, who will have the resources to deliver more effective, comprehensive, and humane care.
Through improved physical and emotional rehabilitation, residents will gain greater independence, comfort, and dignity in their daily lives.
For the residents of Ashabari, healing is not just physical, it is deeply human. A dedicated physiotherapy and recreational space will help them regain strength, reduce pain, and rediscover the simple joys of connection and movement. By supporting this project, Defi For Good ensures that those once left behind are not only sheltered, but truly rehabilitated, empowered, and loved.
