A Home of Hope in India: Support the Running Cost

Introduction

In West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas, one of India’s poorest regions, poverty, hunger, and lack of access to healthcare leave countless people struggling to survive. Amid these challenges, the Calcutta Home of Hope-Ashabari, founded over 25 years ago by Mr. Joseph Das and Mrs. Lily Das, stands as a sanctuary for the abandoned and destitute. Ashabari provides far more than shelter, it offers compassion, healing, and dignity to the homeless, mentally challenged, and critically ill.

Many residents gradually recover their health and memories; some are even reunited with their families, while others find lifelong peace and care within its walls.

India’s population: 1.45 billion

West Bengal: 103 million

Kolkata: 14.7 million

Ashabari residents: 130 rescued individuals, most of them living with severe psychological or physical challenges

The Challenge

Ashabari’s main challenge is sustaining its annual operating costs while caring for more than 130 residents who rely entirely on the Home for food, shelter, medical treatment, and emotional support. With no government funding and a small caregiving staff, the Home struggles to cover essential expenses such as salaries, medicines, meals, sanitation supplies, and emergency rescues. Consistent financial support is crucial to ensure uninterrupted, dignified care for some of the most vulnerable and abandoned individuals in West Bengal.

The Project

The Ashabari Home of Hope faces an ongoing challenge in meeting its annual operating costs. Relying entirely on donor support, the Home continues to provide food, shelter, and medical care to over 130 residents rescued from the streets of Kolkata.

This project seeks to cover one year of essential operating expenses, ensuring uninterrupted care for some of society’s most vulnerable people. Funding will sustain daily operations and the dedicated team of caregivers who make this humanitarian mission possible.

Beneficiaries

Direct Beneficiaries: 130 residents, homeless, mentally challenged, and physically impaired individuals who depend entirely on Ashabari for survival, medical attention, and dignity.

Indirect Beneficiaries: Ashabari’s small team of caregivers, volunteers, and neighboring families who receive occasional medical and humanitarian assistance.

By maintaining consistent funding, the Home can continue to provide safety, nutrition, medical treatment, and emotional rehabilitation, restoring independence and hope to those who have lost everything.

Why This Matters

For Ashabari’s residents, survival is not only about food and shelter, but it’s also about being seen, cared for, and valued. Each contribution keeps alive a mission of compassion that transforms despair into dignity.

By supporting this project, Defi For Good ensures that the Home of Hope continues to serve as a sanctuary where the forgotten find care, the sick find healing, and every person is treated with love and respect.
