Rainwater tank and dining room in Tanzania

Tanzania is a country of great natural beauty and cultural diversity, yet many rural communities face severe poverty, limited infrastructure, and scarce access to basic services.
In Kahama, where our center is based, families struggle daily with malnutrition, lack of healthcare, and the absence of clean water. For them, life is defined by uncertainty, and resilience.
For six months each year, clean water is nearly impossible to secure. Families walk dozens of kilometers or pay for costly deliveries, often settling for contaminated sources that spread disease. The absence of reliable water also disrupts schooling, meals, and community life. At the same time, education remains a priority for Kangeme families, even when facilities are inadequate. Meeting these two fundamental needs, water and education, is essential to breaking cycles of poverty and building a healthier, stronger community.

This initiative tackles two urgent needs in Kangeme: access to clean water and improved learning conditions for children.
1. Rainwater Collection Tank
- Collect and store rainwater from the roof of the center’s multipurpose hall.
- Build a raised platform for easy pumping and distribution.
- Supply water to the school, dining room, kitchen, and nearby homes.
- Employ local labor to build the system, creating jobs and community ownership.
2. Kindergarten Dining Room
- Construct a dining hall closer to the classrooms for the 90 kindergarten students.
- Equip it with age-appropriate benches and tables to create a safe, welcoming space.
- Reduce the burden of long daily trips for young children and staff.

- 3,000 people across 43 villages will benefit from the rainwater harvesting system.
- 200 children will directly benefit from the new dining room at the center’s kindergarten and primary school.
- The broader community, families of subsistence farmers living in modest homes, will gain access to cleaner water and improved education facilities.
Clean water is health. A dining room is nourishment. Together, they create the foundation for learning, dignity, and hope. By supporting this project, Defi For Good is helping Kangeme families move from survival to opportunity, one drop, one meal, and one child at a time.
